How to work it
Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through the first two loops, then yarn over and pull through the last two. Fast and open, it is the standard for blankets and garments. Written tr (treble) in UK terms, so always check which term set a pattern uses.
US and UK
This stitch is also called Treble (UK). Always check which term set a pattern uses before you start, since the same name can mean a different stitch across the two.
Common confusions
What does dc mean?
In crochet patterns, dc means Double crochet. A tall, quick stitch. This is the UK treble, and the UK double crochet is our single.
Does dc mean the same thing in US and UK patterns?
No, and this is the trap. A US double crochet is a tall stitch worked with one yarn over. A UK double crochet is the short stitch a US pattern calls single crochet. If a pattern uses dc as its shortest stitch, you are reading UK terms.
Does the turning chain count as a stitch?
It depends on the pattern, and both conventions are common. A chain-3 counted as a stitch means you skip the first real stitch and work the last stitch into the top of the previous turning chain. Not counting it means you work into every stitch. Pick whichever the pattern states and stay consistent, because switching mid-piece is what makes edges drift.
